Class Assignment Examples

The following assignments are designed to develop student computer software skills,  communication, and critical thinking skills


1.  Buying a Computer

Suppose that you have a budget of $2,000 for the purchase of a new computer, and that includes everything: computer, display device, printer, storage devices, and software. Go to the Computer Buyer's Guide InfoWeb and fill out the Needs Assessment worksheet.  Next, fill out the Peripherals and Accessories worksheet.  Finally, using the shopping links, find three computers that meet your needs and fit within your budget.  Fill out the Comparison worksheet with the specifications for these computers.  After filling out all of the worksheets, write a short description of your final equipment selection, indicating how well you managed to stay within your budget.

2.  Biometric Devices and Security:
Research Paper

Following our discussion in class relating to the issue of security and biometric devices, use  www.webopedia.com as your major research resource and write a two page, single line paper in which you a) define what biometric devices are;    b) list six devices that you intend to write about;     c) give details of your six chosen devices;
d) write a conclusion in which you give your own opinion about biometric devices and the issue of privacy.  Please add a Reference page containing the URLs from which you obtained your material for this research paper. 

3.  PowerPoint Presentation

Create your own PowerPoint presentation on a topic approved by the instructor.  Your presentation will be graded using the following criteria:
a. Use an appropriate theme for the chosen topic
b.  Ensure that all screens have a navigation system
c. Place a title at the top of each screen
d.  Add an Overview after the opening screen
e.  Include appropriate images - ensure that they
     are of high quality and sized appropriately
f.   Avoid using full sentences - use phrases
g. Avoid  cluttered screens
h.  Include  three links to meaningful Web sites
i.   Check for typing and spelling errors
j.   Program bullets
k.  Use screen transitions
l.    Ensure that the presentation works prior to
      showing it to the instructor and class colleagues

4.  Software Piracy and License Agreements

Copyrights and software piracy are critical issues.  For this project, write a two page paper about this issue based on information that you gather from the Internet.  To begin this project, consult the Copyright and Piracy Info Web and link to the recommended Web pages to get an in-depth overview of the issue.  Armed with this background, select one of the following viewpoints and statements and argue for or against it:

a.  Software Publishers Association:  Strong copyright laws and enforcement are essential in order for companies to publish and support high-quality software.

b.  Free software advocates:  As an enabling technology, software should be freely distributed, along with its modifiable source code.

5.  Microsoft FrontPage Web Site

Create a Web site using Microsoft FrontPage as your editor. Before you begin, select a topic then discuss this topic and how you intend to develop it with the instructor. Next, storyboard your topic as demonstrated in class.  Following are the criteria by which your Web site will be assessed:

a.  Your Web site will consist of eight pages
b.  Include an appropriate Theme
c.  Use Tables on each page
d.  Include at least one image on each page.
e.  Ensure that your images are of high quality as
    defined in class
f.  Include at least three hyperlinks to the Web
g. Ensure that each page has i) a Page Banner
    ii) at least one image, iii) a minimum of three
    paragraphs - each paragraph must consist
    of more than five sentences, iv) a Navigation
    system
h. Check for typing and spelling errors
h. Check that the Web site works!
