Welcome to CIS105. This course is designed to capture your interest and excite you about the dynamic world of computers. It will help to prepare you for succeed in the new digital world of the 21st century. By enrolling in this course you have taken the first step toward computer competence. Work hard and remain focused on your goal.

Just a word about computer anxiety - yes, some of us worry about using computers! This course has been carefully designed to make learning about computers and learning new applications enjoyable. I am available to help you solve problems as are the Computer Commons staff on the ground floor .

1. COURSE DESCRIPTION

Overview of computer information systems, fundamental computer concepts and programming techniques. Hands-on experience with selected business software and one programming language.

6. ATTENDANCE


Attendance is extremely important. First, any changes made to the Course Tracker are made in class. Secondly, information relating to assignments is given in class. Finally, the teaching and learning process is carried on in class. Please inform me if you need to be away on certain days, or e-mail me if you are not well. Students will be dropped from the course if three class meetings are missed.

LATE SUBMISSION OF WORK

If work is not handed in on the date indicated in the course tracker, it will be accepted at the next class meeting, with a 50% reduction of points possible.

1. Summarize the historical development of information processing and the computer and describe its impact on society.
2. Identify common uses of computers in business and other sesctors of society.
3. Identify the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of typical business hardware configurations.
4. Name common hardware components of business systems and describe their user.
5. Describe methods and requirements for batch, real-time and database processing.
6. Name common teleprocessing hardware devices and their use.
7. Identify common components of an operating system.
8. Identify several widely used programming languages and describe weaknesses and strengths   
9. Name and explain the steps in the system development process.
10. Describe the components of common business systems such as office automation,   point-of-sale and electronic funds transfer.
11. Describe the components of a Management Information System.
12. Use a computer to negotiate common terminal operations.
13. Use word processing, spreadsheet and database software to complete common business operations and transactions.
14. Identify career paths, and job opportunities in computer information Systems and the responsibilities for each.


Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes

Communications and Critical Thinking are currently being integrated into a wide variety of Estrella Mountain courses. By integrating these abilities into a variety of courses offered at the college, students benefit twice. They learn course content and they develop these important abilities to enhance student success in academic and professional pursuits. MASTERY PROJECTS

The purpose of  mastery projects is to enable you to demonstrate competence in using a microcomputer with a variety of widely-used  applications. Each mastery project will be clearly explained in class.

This tracker may be amended to serve you better. Any changes will be given to you during class time. Friday's are Labs - attendance is not mandatory - however, all required work must be completed and handed in on the DUE date.
