My CIS105 (Survey of Computer Information Systems) course is linked with
EDU221 (Education Principles) to form a learning community
specifically targeting minority students who intend to enter the
field of education. Collaborating with the
Occupation/Education Department ensures that pre-service teachers will
be technologically competent when they enter the classroom. In
addition, these prospective teachers will be aware of the pedagogy of
technology as it is woven into the day-to-day educational
process. Furthermore, I collaborate with Ray Simpson, Director
of the Community Partnership Program who oversees inspire.teach.
Inspire.teach is a 2+2+2 program. This
first "2" represents juniors and seniors at the high school
level, the middle "2" represents two years at Estrella
Mountain Community college, and the final "2" represents the
concluding two years at Arizona State University West. This
structure insures a smooth transition from high school to the
community college to university thereby increasing the likelihood of
success.
Among the numerous benefits for students in the inspire.teach
program and the CIS105/EDU221 Learning Community are:
-
Acceptance into ASU West
College of Education (with a G.P.A. of 2.5 or higher and
completion of ATP Degree)
-
Internships for practical experience
-
Networking opportunities
-
Support services
-
Scholarships and financial aid
-
Annual events and social activities
