Sample  Assignments

The following assignments are designed to develop  Adobe Photoshop  communication, and critical
 thinking skills

 

1.  A visit to the Museum of Computer Art and the deconstruction of art with a critical appraisal.

Photoshop takes photographs that you've taken and can turn them into exciting artistic creations.  MOCA -- the Museum of Computer Art features incredibly exciting work of new digital artists.  Working with a partner, go onto the Web and type in: http://moca.virtual.museum/

Examine these artists' work:
a.  Mamta Herland 
b.  Malanda 
c.  Zaelia Bishop 
d.  Ana Pavlova 
e.  Fernando Hocerar 

Deconstruct specific products by the above items, then answer these questions:

1.  What images would no need to create this montage?
2.  In what format would you need them 
3.  What techniques would you use to create this effect?
4.  Do you like this image?  If so, why? 

Be prepared to discuss your answers to these questions in a group discussion. 


2. Examining Photoshop's Liquify Effect 

Go onto the Web and use either dogpile.com, google.com, or another search engine with which you feel comfortable. Find information about the Liquify feature in Photoshop (for example: http://www.adobe.com/webstudio/photoshop/phsliquify/main.html)

Answer the following questions:

1. Do you like this image? If so, why?
2. Does the distortion created by the Liquify effect prevent you
    from determining what the image is?
3. In your opinion, does the distortion make the image more or
    less effect?
4. How was the distortion created?
5. After seeing this sample, what is your opinion as to the 
    overall effectiveness of the Liquify feature? How can it best 
    be used?
6. Be prepared to discuss your answers to these questions
    in a group discussion.  


3.  Information Booklet Cover

Design the cover for an Information booklet. Your client is a holiday resort who wants to attract younger guests.  Before you begin go online and check out a number of holiday resort web sites.

a. use one image for the entire background 
b. use one image that will serve as the focal point 
c. include at least two other images to surround the focal point 
d. consider the example used in class where a young girl has a 
    layer mask applied - then copied to another layer that has an 
    elliptical marquee with Drop Shadow and Bevel and 
    Emboss styles applied.
e. use tropical foliage in the foreground enhanced with a layer 
    mask


4.   Company Annual Report Cover 

Design and create the cover for an Annual Report.  The 
company sells sports equipment and clothing.  Before you 
begin go onto the Web and find examples of company reports 
as reference points.  

     .  uses warp text 
     .  include a gradient background 
     .  use one central image 


5.  Poster 

The town's arts society is holding a jazz festival and want you to create a poster. 

a.  use one image of an instrument that will dominate the poster 
b.  include a textured background 
c.  use warp text and layer effects on the text - ensure that the 
     title uses a font that is easy to read and larger than 48 pts. 
d.  apply at least one filter to the main instrument layer
e.  ensure you add information individuals would need to know
     when and where to attend the festival


6.  Collage

Create a montage featuring transparent effects with layers.  Select a topic which has a theme.  For example, different pictures of church buildings, Russian church, Russian text, Kremlin building etc.  You're approach should be to:

a.  assemble the images that you intend to include, use the 
b.  combine some images as different layers
c.  target the layer you want to blend and select a Blending mode

Remember ...

Dissolve creates a diffusion dither that is resolution dependent - so consider carefully before you decide to use it
Multiply, Screen, Overlay, Soft Light, Hard Light, Color Doge and Color Burn  are good general purpose blending modes with which to experiment 
Darken and Lighten creates less natural-looking effects 
Difference and Exclusion create negative or solarized effects that tend to be radical 
Hue, Saturation, Color, and Luminosity are used primarily to alter color in an image.
