Characteristics
of Effective Portfolios
- A collection of materials documenting teaching
performance which is useful for documenting teaching as an institutional
priority (Seldin; Annis)
- A collection of documents that represents the best of
one's teaching and provides one with the occasion to reflect on his or her
teaching (Murray).
- Typically, it is a relatively short (6-8 pages)
document of materials that summarize and highlight your character as a
teacher (University of New Hampshire, Future Faculty Program).
- A documented statement of a faculty member's teaching
responsibilities, philosophy, goals, and accomplishments as a teacher (TEC
Bulletin on Teaching and Scholarship).
- A collection of materials that documents, over and
extended period of time, the range of your abilities as a college teacher
(Urbach).
- A teaching portfolio is a 6 to 8 page document that
summarizes information characterizing you as a teacher. It usually
contains some standardized material, such as student evaluations of
teaching, but commonly also contains information that distinguishes your
teaching from that of others around you (Iowa State University).
- A teacher portfolio is a collection of work produced by
a teacher...designed to demonstrate the teacher's talents (Peter
Doolittle).
- A portfolio for promotion and confirmation purposes is
a short coherent account of a University staff member's achievements as a
teacher (Griffith University).
- It is a factual description of a professor's teaching
strengths and accomplishments (Peter Seldin).
- A teaching portfolio is a summary of your major
teaching activities and accomplishments. It describes documents and
material which collectively suggest the scope and quality of your teaching
(The University of Western Australia, Centre for Staff Development).
- A summary of a professor's major teaching
accomplishments and strengths. It is to a professor's teaching what lists
of publications, grants, and academic honors are to research (Canadian
Association of University Teachers).
