EDTC 555 Internet And Distance Education Delivery

Reflections: As usual I am always thinking, and many times that gets me into trouble. During this class, I attended a presentation at the “All Faculty Convocation”. Our guest speaker spoke about learning in higher education. She sparked some interesting challenges; especially what do students really learn, and more importantly what do they remember. Most of the faculty discussion that followed afterwards revolved around assessing what students know. I am downplaying or suggesting we do away with assessments; however, I believe it is very arrogant of educators to always think we know what is best for the learner. I think it is possible to tighten criteria to the point where we interfere with critical and original thinking. I am acquainted and have had instructors who were so grade orientated that students make a decision to “just get through the class, and give the instructor what he or she wants”. I wish that I could remember the scientist who made an important discovery, and what the discovery was, but it went something like this. “I found the discovery because I misinterpreted what the accepted knowledge was at the time; had I fully understood the accepted theory I would have never traveled this path.”
