MCCD Mentoring Program

Faculty In Progress Program (FIPP)

James Quintero
(Larger View)

When I was asked to become a mentor for our District's FIPP program last year, I was unsure of my potential contribution. I had only been with our District for two years as a full-time faculty. My goal of course was to assist a fellow Information Technology professional transition into a faculty role. What I didn’t realize at the time, how much personal growth and professional growth I would gain. This experience has been the most rewarding teaching and learning experiences I have ever had. I only hope that James Quintero, my Faculty in Progress has gained as much from me, as I have received from him.

What is FIPP? (The following information was duplicated from our District Web Site)

The Faculty Recruitment Commission was initiated during the fall of 2000 and was charged with developing strategies for faculty recruitment. Given the number of residential faculty in the Maricopa Community College District (MCCD) who are eligible for retirement in the next three to five years, and the Governing Board's goal to serve students by hiring faculty and staff who reflect the communities we serve and who create an environment of equity and mutual respect of each person, the Commission's goals are to suggest changes to faculty hiring policies and procedures, develop a "grow our own" program, and develop and promote best recruitment practices.

The Faculty in Progress Program (FIPP) addresses the "grow our own" concept. It was piloted in the 2001-2002 academic year with eleven interns and continues this year with fourteen new interns.

This program is targeted at Maricopa employees who have the potential to become competitive in the pursuit of a residential faculty position. However, the program in no way guarantees a job. FIPP Faculty Interns, when applying for a residential faculty position, must complete the same selection process as any other applicant.

This program is open to all colleges and to District Office (DO) employees. The colleges and the DO will actively recruit candidates in disciplines where:

  • there is an underutilization identified in the MCCCD Affirmative Action Plan
  • there is not a sufficient applicant pool presenting desired qualifications to meet the needs of the college; and/or
  • where recruitment is generally called for under MCCCD's Affirmative Action Plan

    Purpose
The main goal of FIPP is to provide the selected Faculty Interns mentoring and professional development activities that result in the knowledge and skills needed to prepare them to be competitive in the pursuit of a residential teaching position.

The focus of the program is on learning the multiple roles of faculty.

  Ocotillo

Since 1987 Ocotillo has served as a faculty-driven catalyst for addressing technology and learning at the Maricopa Community Colleges. Ocotillo takes its name from a plant which is indigenous to the natural Arizona landscape. Like the plant's branches which reach up and out in many directions, Ocotillo's ideas may reach out, grow, and flourish.

The current structure of Ocotillo is a coordinating team, lead by current co-chairs Sheila Brandt (Scottsdale Community College) and Rick Effland (Mesa Community College), with representative faculty chairs from roundtables at each of the ten Maricopa colleges. Ocotillo's goals for 2002-2003 include discussing and generating ideas related to instructional technology and its strategic use, enabling collaboration across the Maricopa system, and leading activities that promote the effective use of technology for teaching and learning.

  Linux Development Project

This is a collaborative effort by Jim Nichols and myself. Jim and I have been teaching Linux for several semesters. The Linux classes that are being offered at Estrella Mountain Community College are being taught under UNIX course extensions. This has also been a problem for many of the Maricopa Colleges throughout the District. Our goal is to create an entire Linux Program that offers certificates and a degree.   Information Security Program

This year a multi-campus Information Security Program has been initiated. I am very excited to have been selected to attend. Security breaches have been costing the world-wide consumer billions of dollars. This area is experiencing exponential growth in the Information Technology profession!
